ACS Ipoh

Anglo-Chinese School, Ipoh was founded by Rev. William Edward Horley in 1895 as a Methodhist missionary school. It is located at Jalan Lahat, Ipoh.

This school caters to students from Primary One to Form 6. It was primarily a boy school but co-ed for the sixth formers. It has a swimming pool, indoor badminton stadium and gymnasium, a library, computer and science labs; and guess what?... the guys toilets was in a basement which some of them call 'their office'! I did my Upper and Lower Six (A Levels) in this school. During those days, there were also a boys hostel (Horley Hall) sharing the same building with the swimming pool and the girls hostel was across the road, next to the gymnasium (Dewan Teerath Ram).

The school had a chapel and behind this chapel was a graveyard. Mr P. Subramaniam was the headmaster then, Mr Chin the music teacher and Mr Brian Fernando, the most feared discipline master. During morning assembly, we were taught to sing songs like, "We Shall Overcome, Pearly Shells, Joy is Like the Rain, Malaysia-Malaysia, Blowing in the Wind, and of course our ACS school song, "Not so very long ago, Horley dauntless hero came, founded our beloved school, Ipoh Anglo-Chinese School" ...... very nostalgic indeed!

  3. Yes, during my time (Upper 6: 1977), the icons were there. Mr P. Subramaniam, the principal, Mr Chin the music teacher & Mr Brian Fernando, the discipline master. Physics teacher: Mr. Ng Chee Beng. The drama for that year was Carousel. A sentimental year to remember!

    1. Thanks for the memories. Yeah, Mr Ng was a much revered Physics teacher. Those who can't get to be in his class will go for his tuition instead. We got him for Physics Practical exam and he was a comforting presence to calm our examination nerves. It is nice to remember back our teachers and our names.
