Peacock Rangoli for Deepavali

Today is ABC Wednesday.
P is for .....
Peacock!

This is a rangoli of a peacock. Rangoli (Kolam) is an ancient folk art and Indian tradition. Rangolis are said to attract good luck, wisdom and wealth, hence they are very popular during Deepavali season and we see a lot of them at the entrances or courtyards of homes, shopping complexes and business premises.

The peacock is the national bird of India and it enjoys full protection under the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.

Deepavali is known as the "Festival of Lights", a celebration of triumph of good over evil, light over darkness. Deepavali is derived from the Sanskrit words, "deep" for lights and "awali" for a row of lights. In Hindu mythology, Lord Vishnu is one of the 3 gods who rule the world. It is believed that there are 10 reincarnations of Lord Vishnu. On Deepavali day, Lord Krishna, defeated the evil demon King Narkasura.

In Feng Shui, the heavenly Phoenix is considered king of all our feathered friends. The peacock is also an auspicious symbol. It is placed in the south to attract great opportunity luck and in the southwest to promote harmony among the family members.
