Jan 2012 CDP Theme Day - Year of Rabbit 2011 a good year for marriage?

Today is City Daily Photo Theme Day. I captured this photo from my TV screen while I was watching the live telecast of The Royal Wedding on 29 April 2011 at 6.13pm local time. I choose this as my Photo of The Year 2011.

I was enchanted with this fairy tale wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton and I sincerely wish that they will have a "..... and they lived happily ever after" ending. I like the way he held her hand as they looked into each others' eyes and how everyone else were so happy for them. It shows here, don't you think so?

Do you know that in a Year of The Rabbit, many Chinese couples tie the knot. 2011 happened to be such a year, hence there were many weddings in 2011 with restaurants and venues fully booked. This is because it is hoped that the following year will bring forth a Dragon baby which is good news for parents and grandparents. It is believed that a dragon child, especially a dragon baby boy will bring instant good chi and hence lots of good luck and fortune to the blessed family.

2012 is the Year of The Dragon. It is expected that there will be a baby boom, to be followed a few years later with high enrollment in kindergartens, schools and colleges, making it very competitive among dragon children.

Happy New Year 2012!

Economy, Fast and Efficient Haircut By The Indian Barber

Today is City Daily Photo Theme Day for December 2011, the theme is "Action".

Who do you go to when you need a fast, cheap and efficient haircut? Well, the trusted Indian barber of course!  These people are experts and master craftsmen because they will always shake their heads (which signifies a YES) when you ask if they can do this style or that style, crew cut no. 1,2 or 3, Bollywood, Hollywood, David Beckam, Johnny Depp, K-Pop Rain, Justin Bieber, curly, spiky, classic, trendy or even Master Q - no problem at all!

The cost is about RM 8.00 or USD 2.42 for a 15 min hair cut. Some enterprising shops are situated just next to a car wash centre, so you could get a haircut and head massage while waiting for your car to be cleaned.

Just that - it looks like this is a 'guys only' thingy. I have never seen a lady come for a hair cut at such shops.

Where do you go for your haircut?

City Daily Photo Theme Day Oct 2011 - Mystery Object

Today is City Daily Photo's theme day for October 2011. The theme is Mystery Object.

The mystery hanging objects are called "Buddha's Hands". Have you heard of Citron fruits?

I like the citron tea, "yujacha" (柚子茶) served at a Korean Barbecue Restaurant here.

Citron fruits are produced from a small tree, the scientific name of the tree is Citrus medica. The fruits are usually oval to rounded in shape and turn from green to a golden yellow when riped. Those pictured above are extreme forms when the fruits become divided into fingers called "fingered citron" or "Buddha's hand citron".

The citron was already cultivated in Mesopotamia before 500BC.

To read more about Buddha's hands, click here.

These items are for sale at Chin Pomelo Farm, the place I photographed them. You can also view a specimen tree at the Secret Garden of 1-Utama, Petaling Jaya. I have seen the rounded fruits as well as fingered citron there.

City Daily Photo Theme Day Aug 2011 - Postcard Worthy

This picture was taken at the Growers Show Gardens at Putrajaya Floria 2011 Flower and Garden Festival which was held on 9-17 July.

This was a favourite location for portrait photography. I even saw a bride and groom taking their wedding photos here.

City Daily Photo Theme Day for July 2011 - The Colour Green

The bench below this big shady tree is a good gathering place for a few elderly friends on an idyllic Saturday morning. This area is a playground with foot reflexology paths for healthy exercises. The place is in front of Gunung Hijau School in Pusing town. The Pusing Chinese Temple and Gunung Hijau School is further up on the right.

City Daily Photo Theme Day for April 2011 - Edge

A person can grow only as much as his horizon allows.
..... John Powell

Today is City Daily Photo Theme Day for April 2011 and the theme is 'Edge'.

The above is a view of the vast horizon a short distance away from Swettenham Pier. A long long time ago, the horizon used to be regarded as the edge of the world. During the pre-war days, single people liked to visit the promenade here during Chap Goh Meh (Chinese Valentine's Day) to throw mandarin oranges into the sea in the hope of meeting that special someone in their lives.

Updated on 3 Feb 2012:
This year the ancient tradition of throwing mandarin oranges during Chap Goh Meh will be held at the Straits Quay promenade in Tanjung Tokong from 7pm to 11:00pm. This is part of the "Chap Goh Meh by the Sea" celebration with performances by a modern Chinese orchestra, a Chinese acrobatic team, a dragon dance and the beating of 24 Chinese drums.

City Daily Photo Theme Day Dec 2010 - Time

Here's a Team of Teddy Bears who are sharing our home. If by chance they can come alive, perhaps by magic, I am sure that they will Twist and Twirl and dance with joy to the Tunes of Telly Toons. Maybe you can recognise some of them, e.g. a few are from the McDonald's version of Ty's famous Teeny Beanie Babies and some are Alphabet Teddies. Theres a pair from Santa's household. Some are presents, some are from Happy Meals. The tiny brown bear holding a red heart is made of procelain. The big brown one is the most Treasured because it is a prize winning from a Throwing Games stall at Genting Highlands Theme Park. The white fluffy fella is a gift from someone special. My son nickname it Fluffy Bear and I call it Bulu-bulu Bear (meaning lots of hair). But of course my daughter has her own special name for it, afterall it is hers!

Today is City Daily Photo's Theme Day for December 2010. The theme is TIME.

Time, the cradle of hope....
Wisdom walks before it, opportunity with it, and repentance behind it:
he that has made it his friend will have little to fear from his enemies,
but he that has made it his enemy will have little to hope from his friends.
 ~Charles Caleb Colton

Today is also ABC Wednesday and the word is T!

T is for
..... TIME and my Treasures,
my Today's Team of Terrific Teddy Toys!

As I Think back Through Time, I realise that Teddy bears are now very much a part of our lives. From the time we were little until we reach adulthood, Teddy bears and Toys are great companions and they help to brighten up our lives. They are our shoulder to lean on, our pillow to cry on and our punching bag during our Turbulent Times of anger when we want to Throw Tantrums. Perhaps they also listen to our secrets. They may be a calm and constant companion to a frightened child during Terrifying nights of Thunderstorms and lightning flashes. Just like ice-cream, give a Teddy Bear to a child and you can see a smile light up.

Do you have a special Teddy Bear among your collection of treasures?

“CityDailyPhoto July 2010 Theme Day - Reflections”, a copyrighted post, was written for Klang, Malaysia Daily Photo blog by Autumn Belle @ http://mymalaysiadailyphoto.blogspot.com/

Todays is City Daily Photo's Theme Day and for July 2010, it is "Reflections". I have snapped a picture of some reflection on the glass door of a hotel entrance under the morning (about 9am) sunlight.

The palm trees are from the garden in front of the hotel while the buildings on the right are shop houses and those on the left are terrace houses or family homes.

Can you see the lobby and a cake shelf inside?

June 2010 City Daily Theme Day - Funny Signs

This drawing on the wall wishes everyone "Selamat Hari Raya", meaning Happy Hari Raya. While I admire the drawing skill of the artist, I have scrutinized and looked at this picture many many times and I am still wondering what is the message that the artist is trying to convey. Is it happy, sad, or frustrated?

A funny sign because I still don't get it!

Is graffiti the art of a genius or art crime?

Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong Statue at Chin Swee Temple, Genting Highlands

Today is City Daily Photo Theme Day, the topic is "Statues"

At the Chin Swee Caves Temple, Genting Highlands, there is a granite statue of the late Tan Sri Lim Goh Tong (1918 - 23 Oct 2007) who was the founder of Genting Highlands Resort. He was born in Anxi, Fujian Province, China. He came to Malaysia in 1937 at the age of 19. To read more about this great man, you can click on the name.

"This statue is erected by Genting Group and the Chin Swee Caves Temple Building Society in appreciation of Tan Sri Lim’s leadership in the development of Genting Highlands Resort and Chin Swee Caves Temple. The statue is also a show of gratitude for his immense philanthropic contributions to society and a mark of respect for his great success in business.

There are inscriptions on a plaque behind the late Tan Sri Lim’s statue describing his role as the founder of the Chin Swee Caves Temple Society and as the man who was instrumental in leading a group from the Anxi Clan to build this Temple to commemorate the good deeds of the Reverend Chin Swee. The inscriptions also document the late Tan Sri Lim’s personal contributions and devotion to the continuing upgrading and improvement of the Temple’s facilities in all aspects."

CDP Theme Day - The Tennin Technique

Today 11th March 2010 is CDP Theme Day : The Tennin Technique. This is my tribute to the great photographer Eric Tennin for founding City Daily Photo.

I am participating with my pet tortoise, Blastoise as my model. My camera is placed on the floor while Blastoise gets into mischief and he is trying to enter my sitting room via the side door entrance. Well, he has succeeded. Don't you think he is smiling, and looking quite smug?

Our CDP main website read as follows:

Today is the 5th Anniversary Tribute to Eric of Paris Daily Photo from fellow CDP Bloggers. Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery, all CDP Bloggers are invited to post a tribute shot from their own city using The Tennin Technique of placing the camera on the ground to make an image, or of skewing/tilting the composition, or in some way imitating a specific photo Eric has posted or a common subject matter of Eric's photos. Take a moment to study the look and feel of his shots. Feel free to work creatively with this theme of The Tennin Technique. Have fun with it, make it your own and help.

KTAR Passageway

This is a view from the side entrance of Tunku Abdul Rahman College, my alma mater. It is often known as TARC or KTAR. The college is located at Jalan Genting Kelang, Setapak, Kuala Lumpur. It was established on 24 Feb 1969 and named after Malaysia's first Prime Minister, the late YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj.

From here, you can see at least 2 passageways, one that leads to the tutorial blocks and reading room and another that leads to the basketball courts and football field. Students are under a lot of pressure to perform well at the examinations. They should also take time off to 'play', relax and have fun.

This college has churned out many succcessful students who went on to become great entrepreneurs, CEOs and statesmen. When I look at this photo, nothing much has change. It never fail to bring back fond memories of my happy student days as a Tarcian at Taman Bunga Raya. Like the group of youngsters here in the picture, I was also a student of TARC more than 20 years ago. To all the Tarcians who happen to see this post, I wish you "All the very best in your studies, don't let go of your dreams and may you be as successful as you want to be!"

Today is City Daily Photo theme day for March 2010. The theme is "Passageways".

City Daily Photo January 2010 Theme Day - Wood

Click here to view thumbnails for all participants

This is a typical Malay Kampung House in the rural area of Perak, Malaysia. Almost the whole house is made of wood. When I was a little kid, I have stayed in a similar house before. My parents were teachers and they were given a government PWD (Public Works Department) house to stay. Because the walls are made of wood and supported by stilts, it is actually quite cool inside eventhough the weather is hot and sunny outside. I love to play masak-masak (cooking), hide & seek and happy family with my friends, cousins and siblings under the house. Our pet cats and dogs love to nap here too. Some people keep chickens here. Those families that live in houses with higher stilts can also hang their clothes or fix a hammock under the house. Also, whenever it rains and there are flash floods, wouldn't you be glad you have a house like this?

Have you ever live in or visited such a house before?

A real Malay Kampung House
