The Railway Station - Taj Mahal of Ipoh
The Ipoh Railway Station which was built in 1917 was designed by the then government Architect, A. B. Hubback, who was also the architect for the a similar looking Kuala Lumpur Railway Station which was completed in 1911. The railway station and the hotel in Ipoh was only completed in 1935 due to a shortage of building materials and rising costs due to World War I. When it was finally opened, Perak state was experiencing a boom in the tin-mining industry.
This was one of the sites for the 1999 Hollywood movie, Anna and the King, staring Jodie Fister and Chow Yun-Fat and directed by Andy Tennant. This movie was an Academy Award nominee in 2000 for Best Art Direction and Best Costume Design. This site is also a favourite movie site for other Malaysian and foreign productions.

St Michael's Institution, Ipoh
The original building is now a herritage site in Malaysia.
History
In 1912, Reverend Father J.B. Coppin from St. Michael's Church bought a plot of land in Kampong Pisang. A bungalow on Clayton Road served as the school building and P.J. Morsingh was appointed as the first Headmaster of St. Michael's Institution. For the convenience of students, a well was built beside the school. The foundations of both the bungalow and the well remain to this day.
Father Coppin who was given the task of administering the school, obtained the necessary grants from the Perak government. The school opened on 4 December 1912, with 37 students.
By 1913, the school enrollment had grown to 139. There were three major government examinations: Standard IV, VI, & VII. Cambridge classes were introduced in 1917, the same year the school's enrollment reached 300.
Frenchman Brother Vernier Augustus, who was trained in architecture, oversee the construction of a proper building, which was completed by the end of 1921. The building he designed was strongly ecclesiastical, Gothic and simple in its detailing. All classroom doors were arranged to face either north or south, never east or west, so that sun rays would not cause disturbance to class activities.
The foundation stone for the new building was laid on 17 June 1922 by Major C.W.C. Parr OBE, who was the British Resident in Perak. Father Coppin blessed the finished building on 15 May 1923, the Feast Day of St. John Baptist De La Salle. The school was completed in stages over a period of some 30 years, and was included as a must-visit site in the Tourist Guide Book to Perak
During World War II the school became an army transit hospital camp for the British Army. 15 days after Japan declared war in 1941, Japanese planes machine-gunned the building and damaged the roof. Looters stole furniture and books and even tried to wrench the tabernacle door from the altar of the school chapel. For three days, the Brothers stayed in St. Michael's church. St. Michael's Institution became the headquarters of the Japanese government of Perak and became known as "Perak Shu Seicho".
The school served many purposes during the Japanese occupation. The first floor of the main building and the hall were used as the police department and the treasury respectively. A petrol kiosk was built near the porch of the building of the Primary school. The lecture theater was the air raid shelter for Japanese officers and the top floor was used as the governor's rooms. The first classroom on the ground floor served as a telephone exchange. The school's occupation ended when the Japanese surrendered, and the school reopened on 24 September 1945.

Just next to it, there is a restaurant where you can sample a decent meal with a few dishes and soup, juices and beer. Next is the barbecue meat shop. If that's not enough, more shopping distractions at the stalls in front with the latest trend of belts, wallets, bags and sunglasses.

Vanilla & D24 Durian Ice Cream
This kiosk sells deliciously looking ice cream. The signs says that the favourite blend is Vanilla and D24 Durian. Now, they also have chocolate, vanilla, strawberry and chestnut flavours. Real durians are displayed here.
A promotion sign reads,
"Our Durian ice-cream is extremely good. Some say "Its World's Best." What Do You Say?
They also have ice-cream tepanyaki.
Now, I really regret that I didn't stop by to have a try as I was in a hurry for an appointment. Im sure durian lovers will like this. Here in Malaysia, some people like to eat durian with rice, durian in ice cream, baked durian cake, durian moon cake, durian dodol, etc. What did I left out?
Would you try this?

Fountain Displays at Symphony Lake of KLCC
Showtime is as follows:
12 noon to 2:00pm and 6:00pm - 11:00pm on weekdays
10:00am - midnight on weekends and public holidays.
This is my entry for Thursday Challenge Photo Theme which is "WATER" (Ocean, Lake, Waterfall, Ice, Rain, Wet Things,...).
UPDATED 6 June 2012
Now you can enjoy the colourful, lighted displays of the KLCC Dancing Fountain from 8pm everyday.
The KLCC Lake Symphony Fountain had undergone a RM10mil upgrade from March-June 2012.
The old fountain which utilized static nozzles and pumps had been in operation for 14 years. It has been upgraded with special Germain technology similar to those in Singapore and Dubai. Now the fountain features our national flower, the hibiscus or "bunga raya", open fan-shaped sprays that dance, sway and spin 360 degrees with a myriad of water patterns in a kaleidoscope of lights that twinkle and gravitate to the music. The dancing fountain is now operational and the show starts at 8pm everyday.

The Life of a Stray Dog
Today I want to pay a tribute to all the homeless dogs who are considered 'strays' on our planet Earth. I came accross this doggie during one of my outstation travels and it (he/she?) is so cute and friendly. I call him Lucky. He seemed very clean, happy and well taken care of. He was wagging his tail and willingly pose for my camera. I shall not reveal where this was taken because if I do, his life may be in danger. I can see that Lucky is not wearing a tag which means he doesn't have a licence which means he is considered a stray dog.
Some local councils employ Dog Catchers to catch strays and put them to sleep. But I guess they forgot about the emotions of the people who loved these strays. Yesterday, our daily newspaer ran a report about the tragedy that befell a 12 year old pet dog. You can read the report here.
"Six men came in a white van and caught my dog Puppy, which I let out of the house for only 5 minutes so it could ease itself. It does not have a licence." That was the last time the owner saw her dog alive. Her dog was put to sleep and buried at a landfill.
They say that dogs are man's best friend. How true. Dogs have given so much happiness to human beings, so here's a poem for all of us:
Prayer of gentleness to all creatures
To all the humble beasts there be,
To all the birds on land and sea,
Great Spirit, sweet protection give
That free and happy they may live!
And to our hearts the rapture bring
Of love for every living thing;
Make us all one kin, and bless
Our ways with Nature's gentleness!
John Calsworthy (1867-1933), Nobel Prize winner for Literature 1932.

ACS Ipoh
This school caters to students from Primary One to Form 6. It was primarily a boy school but co-ed for the sixth formers. It has a swimming pool, indoor badminton stadium and gymnasium, a library, computer and science labs; and guess what?... the guys toilets was in a basement which some of them call 'their office'! I did my Upper and Lower Six (A Levels) in this school. During those days, there were also a boys hostel (Horley Hall) sharing the same building with the swimming pool and the girls hostel was across the road, next to the gymnasium (Dewan Teerath Ram).
The school had a chapel and behind this chapel was a graveyard. Mr P. Subramaniam was the headmaster then, Mr Chin the music teacher and Mr Brian Fernando, the most feared discipline master. During morning assembly, we were taught to sing songs like, "We Shall Overcome, Pearly Shells, Joy is Like the Rain, Malaysia-Malaysia, Blowing in the Wind, and of course our ACS school song, "Not so very long ago, Horley dauntless hero came, founded our beloved school, Ipoh Anglo-Chinese School" ...... very nostalgic indeed!
