Sunset Over Butterfly Park Bukit Tinggi 2, Klang

This is the field where people come for a walk and joy in the mornings and evenings. In the past, I have seen a herd of cows grazing on the grass of this enormous field. I guess it kind of save cost for the cow owner (FOC animal feed) and also for the caretaker of this park (safe on grass cutting costs!).

During the weekends, there are stalls selling colourful kites. Other vendors who ply their trade here include newspapers, nasi lemak and kueh in the mornings and ice-cream in the evenings.

A Magic Blue Drink

While doing research on the internet, I found that in Thailand, people make a blue drink from the Butterfly Pea (Clitoria ternatea) flowers called nam dok anchan (น้ำดอกอัญชัญ). They will serve it with a jar of sweet pandan flavoured syrup and a citrus fruit.

I did an experiment and made my own blue drink by dissolving 3 crush flowers of the butterfly pea in a glass of water. Without the syrup, it is almost tasteless.

However, when I added a few drops of calamansi (citrus lime) juice and stirred, the solution turned purple right before my eyes, like magic!

A is for ABC Malaysian Dessert

“A is for ABC Malaysian Dessert”, a copyrighted post, was written for Klang, Malaysia Daily Photo blog by Autumn Belle @ http://mymalaysiadailyphoto.blogspot.com/ on July 21st, 2010.

Today is ABC Wednesday..
A is for .....
ABC!

In Malaysia, we have a popular dessert which locals fondly calls it ABC.
It stands for Air Batu Campur which literally translates to Ice Cubes Mix.
The correct name is Ais Kacang and to find out more, you can visit Wikipedia here.

The above picture is taken at a home party. The host has served ABC to the delight of the guests. The waiter uses an automatic machine to crush the ice. Traditionally, we used a manual machine where we have to turn a peddle with one hand to make the ice shavings. And yes, we already have ABC long before somebody introduced smoothies and bubble teas here.

Have you tried this before and do your like it?
It is my favourite!

This dessert is available at hotels, resorts, shopping complex outlets but the most delicious ones are found at hawker stalls in the streets.

So, the next time when you are in Malaysia, just tell your host, you want to have ABC Dessert.

A Dragon Sculpture at Chong Kong Tong Temple, Klang

“A Dragon Sculpture at Chong Kong Tong Temple,Klang”, a copyrighted post, was written for Klang, Malaysia Daily Photo blog by Autumn Belle @ http://mymalaysiadailyphoto.blogspot.com/ on July 19, 2010.

A Dragon King (龙王) sculpture made of concrete at the Chong Kong Tong, a Chinese taoist temple located off Jalan Kapar, Klang. I think this is Dragon King because this dragon wears an emperor's crown on its head. He is also holding a brush (left) and a tablet written with word 'King' (right). Dragon King is a Chinese taoist god.

According to taoist beliefs, the 4 Dragon Kings are the devine rulers of the 4 seas. The can also appear in the human form. They live in crystal palaces guarded by shrimp soldiers and crab generals. They rule the aquatic life and they can also manipulate the clouds and rain. When enraged they can flood cities.....Sourced from Wikipedia.

This temple is situated at 24, Jalan Miri Kaw. 18, 41400 Klang, Selangor, Malaysia.

Nan Thean Tong is also known as Cave of Southern Heaven was established in 1867. As most typical in Chinese temple, auspicious objects adorn the building and surrounding structures. On top of the roof, there two dragons facing a pagoda. On top of the ground floor, there is a horizontal painting depicting The Eight Immortals at the centre. On the left are a couple of dragons guarding a heavenly pearl. On the right of this picture is the picture of Chinese carps leaping over the Dragon Gate.

Behind this temple is a big, natural vertical rainforest on a limestone hill. In fact this temple is located at the foot of a limestone hill. Limestone hills are one of Ipoh's city's main attractions with its own unique floral and fauna.

This temple is located at Gunung Rapat and this stretch of road has the most number of cave temples. Some examples are Ling Sen Tong, Sam Poh Tong and Kwan Yin Tong.

Dessert Street, Ipoh Tong Sui Kai

“Dessert Street, Ipoh Tong Sui Kai”, a copyrighted post, was written for Klang, Malaysia Daily Photo blog by Autumn Belle @ http://mymalaysiadailyphoto.blogspot.com/ on 10th July 2010.

Dessert Street or Ipoh Tong Sui Kai (糖水街) is located at Church Street (Jalan Gereja), Off Jalan Sultan Idris Shah. My favourite eating place in the late evenings is here along this road that is located just next to Sam Tet Primary & Secondary School, Ipoh.  Here's some of my favourite stalls:

Stall no. 21
Here is my favourite tong sui stall where I can find the most delicious deserts, ABC, nyonya kuih, jelly with ice-shavings, Bo Bo Cha Cha, sweet potato, sago, black bean, red bean (红豆沙),  black sesame soup (芝麻糊). Not too sweet but just nice and you can take it hot or cold.

Nyonya desserts such as 9-layered kuih, maize, sago, pak-tong (white sugar) kuih, woon chai (small saucer) kuih all have that special pandan flavour.

Stall no. 18 sells Porridge with a choice of mix pig innards (chee chap chok), frog legs, fish or chicken.
Stall no. 19 sells wanton and soup noodles. There's another one nearby that sells Bah-Kut-Teh, Ipoh style.

Leng Chee Kang (清补凉)  is a tong sui made from dried longans, dried persimmons, quail eggs, snow fungus, barley, gingo seeds and lotus seeds.

Pig offals porridge

Other stalls include Ipoh fried koay teow, stir fried dishes made to order, beef noodles, sotong-kangkong (cuttlefish with water spinach). Some of the hawkers have been selling the same food from their family's secret recipes for many years.

This is one of the place I miss the most whenever I have to leave Ipoh to go back home.

Wenn, you are so lucky!

Outdoor Sports For Kids

“Outdoor Sports for Kids”, a copyrighted post, was written for Klang, Malaysia Daily Photo blog by Autumn Belle @ http://mymalaysiadailyphoto.blogspot.com/ on July 7th, 2010.

All kinds of sports activities are good for kids physical and mental development. Many kids love the outdoors and sports. However many obstacles come in the way. Quite often, there are no basic facilities nearby. For example, there are no children's playground in the housing area, so what do the poor kids do?

1. Play badminton by the main road, in front of the house with gate as the net and using imaginary court lines.

2. Play football on empty fields near construction sites or maybe next to neighbour's houses.

3. Cycle around the neighbourhood if the area is guarded and safe and also if parents allow them to go out.

Do you let your kids go out to play in the evenings ?
What kind of outdoor sports do kids in your area like?

Your Right, Your Say!

The above picture was taken at Pandarmaran Sunday morning market where there are a lot of people doing their morning shopping and marketing. A campaign is going on to get more people who have not regisered before to go and register as a voter.

The voting age is the minimum age in accordance to law that a person must attain to be eligible to vote in a public election. In Malaysia, this age is 21 years old.

My teachers and elders used to tell me that it is important to appreciate our freedom and to exercise our right to vote as good citizens. Having the right to vote would mean that there will be no racial, religious or sexual discrimination. My parents and grandparents has never missed a single election. Having lived through the colonial masters, two World Wars and the Emergency before our country finally attained independence, my grandparents truly appreciate and value their freedom to vote and choose their future leaders. Malaysia is our beloved country and as true citizens of this beautiful country, we must show that we care for her future.

Have you registered as a voter?
Do you go to vote?

The Makamah Tinggi Ipoh or Ipoh High Court is at the back of Ipoh Padang here.

Dinning Reflections

“Dinning Reflections”, a copyrighted post, was written for Klang, Malaysia Daily Photo blog by Autumn Belle @ http://mymalaysiadailyphoto.blogspot.com/

In Malaysia, many of the eateries serve Halal food and a Halal Certificate is displayed in a prominent place. You won't be able to find pork and hard liquer in the menu.
  • Asian dishes arrive on the table all at the same time and the main dish is rice. This is unlike western dining where we have appertizer or starter, the main course and finally desert.
  • At Chinese restaurants, chopsticks and toothpicks are provided. If you don't know how to use chopsticks, you may ask the waiter to bring you a set of fork and spoon.
  • At restaurants serving Malay and Indian dishes, it is quite normal for diners to eat with their hands. You may be served on a banana leaf instead of a plate. Don't be surprise that no fork, spoon or plate is provided unless you ask for it. A bowl of tea with lime juice on the table is for washing your hands, not for consumption!
  • It is considered bad manners to talk while chewing your food.
  • Muslims use the right hand for eating and serving food. NEVER serve food to a guest using your left hand. LEFT-HANDERS take note.

If there some table manners peculiar to your country or culture,
do share them with me.

I'd like to know more about you. Do join in the fun!

Here's the 7 random facts about myself:

I am who I am, thanks to what the school teachers and LIFE teachers taught me.

To all sifus, lao shis and teachers who are currently still teaching, and to Wenn and Ann, who were/are teachers, I salute you for inspiring the next generation of leaders.

To all my former teachers, I salute you. You taught me not only school subjects but also LIFE's good principles, moral values, integrity and honesty. You are not parrots who repeat verses from textbooks but great mentors who shared our parents job. Although it has been a very long time ago, but you will always be remembered and you will always have a special place in my heart. Here's the list of the TEACHERS:

1. Mrs Hoong – My Primary 1 school teacher who patiently taught me how to write ABC by holding her hand against mine. She also taught me good English grammar and pronunciation.

2. Mrs Verghese – The school principal who taught me Chemistry in Secondary 4 and 5. I learnt good moral principles from this graceful, elegant lady in saree. Whenever I think of her, I am reminded of our school motto, “Simple in Virtue, Steadfast in Duty”.

3. Mrs Benedict – In my eyes, a fierce and feared, disciplinary teacher who taught me Geography in lower secondary school. Everyone paid attention during her class and nobody slept. But her lessons were exciting, and there was never a dull moment. When she points at you just as you are starting to doze off, and asked the dredded question, “What was I talking about just now?”, the answer must be out in an instant and we must “know the facts at our fingertips”! Although she was fierce, we loved, admired and respected her.

4. Mr Rama – The Additional Mathematics, Modern Maths and Physics teacher who taught me what a wealth of knowledge could be found in our own school library. He encouraged us to read, not only school books and story books but also reference books, even children's reference books. The important thing he said was to build a strong foundation for after all, the journey to reach the summit always begins with a single step from the bottom. He also introduced me to Pele, Brazilian football and the FIFA World Cup, of which I was hooked and became a supporter to this day eventhough I have never seen Pele play live. It was the meaningful stories he told while teaching the subjects he loved that further reinforced the passion in us.

5. Sister Coleman, the school principal during my Secondary 1-3. I can’t forget how she’d always looked at me with her clear blue eyes, and gently told me that "God Loves Me". She always said, "May God Bless You" as a greeting at the begining or end of a conversation. She used the bible to teach me about God and moral values even though she knew many of us students had our own religion. She said I could listen to her and continue to pray to my God. This lady in white who always wore a headscarf over her blond hair, never criticized nor condemned my religion. The greatest lesson she taught me was the respect for each other's cultural background and religion and this is important towards living harmoniously together as a multi-cultural society.

6. Mr Chin – The school music teacher in Lower and Upper Form 6. I learnt and enjoyed singing Pearly Shells, We Shall Overcome, Joy Is Like The Rain and Blowing In The Wind after the national anthem of Negara Ku during the morning school assembly with him as the conductor. We got to learn singing and drama but our parents didn’t have to spend an extra single cent.

7. Mr P, my General Paper tutor in Form 6, who introduced me to philosophy and looking at life from a different perspective. Who was Socrates, Plato, Einstein, as great thinkers, etc - I didn't know much. He widened my mind and my horizon. He taught me how to use my brains and the pen in ways I have never thought of before.

If you have a teacher who has inspired you, I'd love to know.

CityDailyPhoto July 2010 Theme Day - Reflections

“CityDailyPhoto July 2010 Theme Day - Reflections”, a copyrighted post, was written for Klang, Malaysia Daily Photo blog by Autumn Belle @ http://mymalaysiadailyphoto.blogspot.com/

Todays is City Daily Photo's Theme Day and for July 2010, it is "Reflections". I have snapped a picture of some reflection on the glass door of a hotel entrance under the morning (about 9am) sunlight.

The palm trees are from the garden in front of the hotel while the buildings on the right are shop houses and those on the left are terrace houses or family homes.

Can you see the lobby and a cake shelf inside?
