The Peach of Immortality

This picture was taken at the Chin Swee Temple, Genting Highlands.

According to Chinese forklore, the Peach of Immortality is the food of the gods. This mythical peach tree which is grown in the Heavenly Orchard of the Jade Emperor takes 3,000 years to mature. It will bloom once every 3,000 years and the fruit takes another 3,000 years to ripen. Legend has it that these peaches gives immortality to anyone who eats it and also he/she will stay forever young. When the fruit ripens, there will be a feast among the gods at the palace of the Queen Mother of The West or (Zi Wang Mu, 西王母).

  2. From the info I get from watching Hong Kong TVB drama serials, I remember they mentioned that it takes at least 6,000 years from seed to flower giving a total of 3,000(seed to mature) + 3,000 (to bloom) + 3,000 (Fruit to ripen) = 9,000. Chinese like to round it up to 10,000 or 1 萬 . In daily life, Chinese like to use 萬 to mean long life or infinitity.
